Those who know contemporary American composer Frank Ferko’s more challenging and harmonically sophisticated choral and organ works may be surprised to discover this lovely, easy work set to the well-known Middle English Christmas text. It is written in a declamatory, chant-like, homophonic style with freer statements by the soprano and alto followed by rhythmically stricter SATB sections. The song is slow and relatively quiet with excellent ranges for high school singers. It could be successfully managed by a less experienced choir, but deserves as well a polished performance by a select choir, large or small.
