This piece is fairly well-known in an SATB voicing, but Alfven’s male setting is unfortunately rarely heard. The voicing is essentially TTBB (a cappella), though there is some three-part tenor writing. A swaying triplet motive is haunting in these close registers, and the tight harmonies in the verses prove most effective. There is no English underlay of the text, so it needs to be sung in the original text. Bass needs a solid low E and D, while top tenor sits around top space E, with a rare excursion above the staff. This is a true winner for college and community men’s choirs, and it will be a welcomed addition to your repertoire.
