Ralph Manuel, an American composer who has lived in Brazil, has written a successor to the famous “Alleluia” of Randall Thompson. It is a piece of great warmth of emotion and demands commitment from conductor and singers to perform with expressiveness and intensity. There is some divisi of soprano and bass, but the single low C in the bass can be eliminated if necessary. The outer active homophonic sections of the piece with their appealing melody are contrasted by a faster-moving polyphonic middle section.
