A musical-historical delight, Dvorak provides an expressive and haunting setting of Edgar Allan Poe’s poem. The compelling message is of a love that conquered death. It is set in 6/8 time, marked Andante for an enticing, affectionate feel. The composer uses unison/octaves, canon, text painting and dramatic word stress to tell the story. Robert Dvorak (b. 1919) reveals a sensitive understanding of the human voice and invokes influences of the music of Antonin Dvorak and Edvard Grieg. Some pieces are good “teaching” pieces while others are good “performance” pieces; this one is both. It is effective and not difficult.
