A new work premiered this past Christmas (2000) by Choral Arts Ensemble. The ancient text, known only through a work by Jacob Handl, originates in part from chants of the Midnight Mass for Christmas. A capella choir is embellished by three triangles played at the outset and conclusion. Early in the piece, Franklin quotes the hymn “Of the Father’s Love Begotten” against a slowly repeating, evolving harmonic background, and he ends with a simple “Alleluia” overlapping in six different voices “to represent an infinite number of voices drifting throught the vastness of time.” Duration is 5 minutes of timelessness.
