The Finnish born composer and conductor Jorma Panula gives us this charming arrangement of the child’s tune, “Are you sleeping, Brother John?” The piece starts out simply and quite recognizably, but quickly the voices start to accompany one another in a Swingle Singers’-type manner – da ba da ba da, etc. – that is lots of fun and quite challenging. The bass and drum parts are written in, but can also be done ad lib. I actually had my girls perform this piece without the instruments, and while I’ve never heard it with the bass and drum, a cappella did work quite nicely.
