Oh, how I love this gem of a piece for young voices! From the first word (“Art”) and its first vowel (ah), singers will have ample opportunity to focus on beautiful vowels and musical line in this lovely, unison arrangement. The ABA structure of the piece makes learning accessible and gives the director a chance to play with the contrasting B section as well as possibly adding some simple Baroque ornamentation for the returning A section. Despite its antiquated language, the text, “Art thou troubled? Music will calm thee”, is still so relevant today. You can have fun with your singers comparing the language of the 1600-1700’s to the vernacular of today. The text reminds us that, despite our troubles in life, music is always here to calm and soothe us. Oh, so true…
