This is a wonderful setting of a familiar text most are familiar with through the Jacobus Gallus composition. The voicing is somewhat different than the Gallus, but the overall style and treatment of text is quite similar. While the Gallus integrates the final “alleluia ” into the end of the composition, Philips chose to set it as a separate section in triple meter. A delightful, yet accessible piece within reach of the average high school choir. In Bb major, works equally well a step lower.
