One folk song setting that has proven to be invaluable to me throughout the years is “Aupres de ma Blonde.” This SATB, a cappella setting (1:40) by Alice Parker and Robert Shaw, is lively rhythmical and energetic. Much of the appeal comes from the popularity of the melody. The textures of the four French verses differ in voicing and dynamic levels. Often, the voicing changes from SSA to SAT to TTBB back to SATB, which serves to create interest and variety throughout the setting. Basically homophonic, there are enough imitative sections to sustain interest. Not a difficult selection, but one to be considered as useful in any folk song grouping.
