William Hawley was drawn early to the arts, born into the family of an English professor and a poet. He studied at Ithaca College and California Institute of the Arts, studying with avant-garde composers, and focusing on instrumental music. Gradually he turned his attention to choral music, a trend validated by his early success with Six Madrigals, one of which was featured on an album by Chanticleer. Soon after came Beautiful River, written for the Dale Warland Singers in 1989. The serene, expressive setting cascades from a unison in women’s voices to a lush, eight-part texture, a gorgeous treatment of the simple 19th-century hymn by Rev. Robert Lowry.
