“Solov’em Zaletnym” or “Bird of Youth” is a three minute setting of a traditional Russian folksong based on a text by A.V. Kol’tsov. Arranged in a traditional 19th century Russian choral style with thick voicing (men a’4 and women a’3), there exists the contrasting timbres of men versus women and lush romantic harmonies. Although a confident tenor soloist with a high B-flat is necessary, the range of all the choral parts is relatively comfortable. There exists plenty of opportunity for dramatic interpretation: dynamic levels are extreme and the crescendos are very effective. A very clear transliteration guide for the Russian text by Robert S. Beckwith is included in the prefatory notes. An English text is also provided under the notes. The English is usable, but not nearly as effective as the Russian version.
