This piece is an evocative setting of a folk song that depicts, through metaphor, the failure of the 1894 Peasant Revolution in Korea. The three main metaphors used in the piece are the blue bird, the mung bean and its flower, and the merchant. They represent the Japanese Army invading Korea, the nickname of the Peasant Revolution leader (Bong-Joon Chun), and the general public of Korea who hoped for the success of the revolution, respectively. This piece simply yet eloquently portrays the drama and sadness of the failed revolution. It is a plaintive and compelling piece for both singers and audience.
