Based on an instrumental Romanian folk dance (by the same name), the text consist of descriptive monosyllables. Romanian vowel pronunciation is the same as Italian. The text is easy, but takes some agility for the sopranos to sing “ta-ka ta-ka” on sixteenth notes (quarter = 132). ATB parts partner up to provide the choral foundation in an easy ostinato. The middle portion of the ternary form is a slower, legato folk chorale, where one imagines the circle dance slowing down before the final Presto. The performance notes describe “a vigorous dance, using small steps that may include amusing, somewhat athletic stunts.” Accessible and fun, the piece ends with a spoken “muf!”
