This unusual work reflects the composer’s familiarity with Indian and Western classical music. Although only 39 measures long, it is a choral tour-de-force that uses raga-like melodic material and “demands the highest precision of rhythm, and a wide range of tonal and dynamic values.” Although the text is limited to the phoneme “Na,” Paranjoti apparently used the syllables “din tak” an the last two eighth notes of every measure—a performance practice that certainly adds to the excitement.
