This lyric setting of the poem “Lines to an Indian Air” by Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) is very accessible to older middle school students. As the program notes indicate, this love poem “should be sung with fervor, passion and grace.” The piece allows opportunities for teaching phrasing, blend, dynamic nuance and an exposure to a variety of tempo markings.

I love this selection for many reasons, but the chance to work with the beautiful melodic lines to create a moving final product for both students and audience alike is my main motivation. I usually select a middle school boy soprano to sing the introductory solo and prefer violin as the C instrument.
