Dresden Canticles is a motet for a cappella choir and soprano solo, and commemorates the recent and historic reunification of Germany and her people. The music incorporates Biblical themes of peace, reconciliation and restoration interweaving scripture from Isaiah and II Chronicles, the 18th century German hymn Grosser Gott, Wir Loben Dich (Holy God, We Praise Thy Name), and the ancient Gregorian chant Ubi caritas et amor. Representing the three worshipping languages of the Dresden congregation, American performers and the ancient church, the motet is both a dramatic and Iyric setting of the German, Latin and English texts.
