Fun jazz harmonies and rhythmic styles abound in this exciting and challenging arrangement of the traditional spiritual Dry Bones! An upper middle-level to early-advanced TTBB ensemble would enjoy the many challenges this piece has to offer, due largely to chromatic harmonic lines, difficult jazz tuning, and other stylistic aspects such as dynamics, accents, and optional 5-part divisi. All rhythms are homophonic, which allows the director to focus on ensuring rhythmic consistency between parts. However, understanding and “feeling” the jazz swing style of this song will keep singers busy, as will grasping tuning between voices. Using solfege to teach this title will be highly beneficial in helping students to tune vertically throughout the piece. String bass and drum set parts are available separately from the publisher.
