This lively folk dance from the Bosporus region uses a traditional meter and mode, the C harmonic minor scale within a 9/8 divided as 2+2+2+3. The limited divisi and generous repetition render this piece accessible to a wide variety of choral groups. The text is in Turkish; an IPA transcription is provided.

Conductors might introduce the piece by teaching pitches and rhythms on a neutral syllable or with count-singing, paying close attention to the harmonic minor’s characteristic augmented second interval. If available, consult a native speaker for help with pronouncing the short [ɪ] vowel. It should be sung as the close back unrounded vowel /ɯ/, not the familiar American /ɪ/ as given in the transcription.
