Rollo Dilworth’s arrangement of this familiar song has a strong underlying beat and jazz feeling. Vocal ostinati, descant and chanting combine to create the feeling of runaway slaves as they fled to freedom. Program notes describe in detail the use of code words and phrases in the song and their hidden meanings. Students are fascinated by tales of the Underground Railroad and the creative ways slaves found to pass along messages and travel from “station to station” on their way to freedom. Depending on the experience of the group, one could use a single part or both parts plus the spoken chant. The piano accompaniment is sure to get the singers’ and audience’s attention… and hold it throughout!
