Together with Arvo Part and Henryk Gorecki, Tavener has been labeled one of the “Holy minimalists.” This piece is musically simple, based on chant ideas and a few chords with an “Alleluia” refrain following each section of text. Works well in an antiphonal style (men and women). The text, sung in English, is a bit King James in its feel, but is beautiful and meaningful. If you have a room with a few seconds of reverberation, this piece is perfect. I performed it with slides and it worked wonderfully.
