When seeking out multicultural music for your choir, consider this rhythmic, celebratory movement from a setting of the Ordinary Mass (sung in Latin) for tenor soloist (or high baritone), SATB chorus (moderate ranges) and drums. It is written in a call and response, Eastern African, homophonic style with driving, syncopated rhythms and hand clapping. Use congas (or better yet, djembe drums) and shakers (shekere) and add movement to complement this festive piece. Pair it on a program with “Agnus Dei,” the last movement from the same mass – a soft, beautiful rendition for piano, horn and drums. Fun, challenging, but not overly difficult music.
