Zingarelli (1752-1837) is known mostly for his operas and church music. This psalm setting is from Christus e Miserere for Lent. The piece begins with a hymn-like adagio section of 22 bars. This is followed by an allegro setting of the text “O Let my mouth be filled with Thy praise”. Robust chordal sections, artistic articulations, dynamic contrasts, interesting interplay between parts all combine to make this a gratifying piece to study and perform. Sung a cappella, it is easily accessible for an advanced high school choir or a challenge for your younger mixed group.
