In true jazz spirit I am pushing the boundaries a bit with this choice. There is no doubt that the arrangement shares elements with jazz, but it has a traditional gospel flair to it. This song could serve as a wonderful cross-over opportunity for your vocal jazz and concert choir to sing together! The harmony is more accessible (triadic) than your typical vocal jazz chart, but your group will be challenged by the stylistic elements and rhythmic feel. Be aware that the range is higher for the Tenor and Bass sections than your concert choir may be accustomed to singing. It will be important for your students to study releases, and focus on unified length and stylistic treatment (vibrato, fall off, dropped consonant) to make the song have the right “punch”. Fun, written out instrumental parts are available, but this also could work well with just piano!
