I should have titled this Pick Six “Songs that Kari Douma is obsessed with and can’t stop listening to and thinking about!” This is a simple, beautiful arrangement by local composer Stephen Paulus. The Dale Warland Singers recorded this on their “Christmas Echoes Volume I” CD years ago. The melody is introduced in unison voices and, in spite of its simplicity, requires quite a bit of sensitivity and control. I would only program this with a choir that was capable of singing sensitively, musically and with a rich, warm tone. The second and third verses continue with the melody while the second voice adds a simple echo. The majority of the piece is in unison. The text is sacred, “Mary had a baby, sing hallelu!,” which may be a deterrent for some schools, I love this piece, however, and it deserves a place in your repertoire rotation.
