Category: JAZZ CHOIRS
Arranger: Kerry Marsh
Setting: Level 2 (Starter Series). Medium Swing with Rhythm Section (piano, bass, drums)
I love, love, love that Kerry has taken this great jazz standard and reharmonized it in such a way that brings it into the 21st century with ease. This piece truly sits well in young SSA voices in terms of range and registration. Great voice leading and homophonic texture, for the most part, which really speeds up rehearsal time. There is a wonderful written scat solo that could also be used as a group effort/teaching tool. The vamp at letter M could also be extended for more solo opportunities. You will hear in the demo how it provides a great opportunity to open up a solo space for your drummer. The swing feel is going to be key to making this piece work. I would start by teaching the rhythm, diction, weight, and phrasing. You can sing all the right notes, but this one needs to feel good to work. Lots of healthy sing-song talking with the metronome or the accompaniment track to start the rehearsal process. Rhythm section parts are fully notated!
