Iconic jazz pedagogue David Baker was a prolific composer of choral music, most of it unpublished. This 18-minute work is in five short movements and captures five tableau scenes from Black inner-city life as captured by poet Mari Evans. Evocative, gorgeous, challenging, and very rewarding to sing. Sometimes referred to as a “jazz-fusion” piece, it could form a nice entry into programs about social justice, income disparity, and even gratitude.
