One of my favorite settings of this carol is Reginald Jacques’ exquisite adaptation of what was originally an 8-part setting by the English composer, Robert Pearsall. It appears in “Carols for Choirs I,” first published in 1961, and follows Pearsall’s earliest published version from 1838. It can be heard on the Cambridge Singers’ “Christmas Night.” This is a most satisfying carol setting, one which your choir is sure to enjoy. The final section’s eight solo voices may be sung by a semi-chorus.
