This deeply moving work sets a poem by Barbara Crooker, a meditation on lost time, attention, and the joy of living in the present moment. Trumbore’s nimble setting shows off her deep gifts in text-setting, alternately capturing the sensations of time passing slowly or quickly. Her accessible harmonic language achieves profundity without ever becoming cliché or soporific.

Given that the piece examines how we experience the passage of time, fidelity to the composer’s indicated tempos and the transitions between them is essential to an effective performance. Though the accompaniment is not challenging, conductors should plan to spend time with their pianist in order to work out transitions. Singers should be coached to be very responsive; constant eye contact is a necessity.
