This a cappella multi-movement cycle is also quite challenging for young women. I have had my groups perform the first two movements only, as the final movements get very low for the alto. Both the first and second movements (“In Dreams” and “We Wake the Day,” respectively) provide lots of rhythmic and melodic interest, and difficulty. The text for these pieces is by Gail Tremblay, who strives to bring more awareness in our culture to Native American traditions and experiences. “In Dreams” is a celebration of life, and throughout the movement the alto and second soprano sing “dumma dum dum,” imitating the sound of a drum, or one could perhaps interpret, a heartbeat. These are wonderful additions to your curriculum for world music.
