In our school, the 8th graders study the Holocaust during the Spring semester, so I would introduce this selection to coincide with their studies. Z. Randall Stroope (b.1953) used the text found inscribed on cellar walls in Cologne, Germany, in a location where Jews were being hidden from the Nazis, and set it to a beloved Russian folk tune. The opportunity to present this historic information via a student narrator over the piano accompaniment prior to the choir’s entrance creates a moving and heartfelt mood. This selection is available in Two-Part, Three-Part Mixed, SATB, SSA, and TTB arrangements with optional string quartet and oboe parts.
