Many treble choir directors are familiar with the SS version (W-10) of this fun, lively, popular folk-song arrangement. Less familiar and, as a result, less often performed is the equally effective mixed choir setting. The French text is not overly long or difficult to learn and is well worth the time spent on it. Your singers will enjoy performing the song and audiences will delight in hearing it. As with other Patriquin folk-song arrangements, the piano accompaniment is superbly written and very “pianistic.” As such, it requires a more advanced pianist. Use of the optional instruments (wood blocks, finger cymbals, triangles, etc.) is strongly encouraged as they add to the overall color and effect of the piece. The mixed choir arrangement of “J’entends le Moulin” can be heard in performance on the Elmer Isler Singers concert at the 2002 World Choral Symposium and on a recording of the Dale Warland Singers’ 30th Anniversary Concert found on Minnesota Public Radio’s website:
