Kyrie is an exquisite, highly expressive piece of music appropriate for good treble choirs at all levels, children through adult. Written in ABA form, the opening and closing “Kyrie eleison” sections in c minor are contrasted with the middle “Christe eleison” in C major. The melodic material is sung in unison, two-part canon and three-part homophony. The music is not difficult and all the voice parts have ranges that are very accessible. Although the soprano solo is not overly difficult, it does require a fairly strong singer or singers in order to carry over the rest of the chorus. The solo could be sung be a very good school-age soprano, a small groups of sopranos, or an adult female singer. Originally written for chamber orchestra, this version is an orchestral reduction for keyboard (piano) that works very well. The obbligato oboe part is a nice addition to the arrangement but is not necessary to a satisfactory performance of the piece. A recording of the entire Missa Brevis in C minor can be found on the Vancouver Chamber Choir’s CD Earth Chants (CBC Records, SMCD 5219). Also note on the CD, the composer’s “Ave verum corpus” for a cappella mixed chorus and “In the Night We Shall Go In” for mixed chorus, cello and piano. Two wonderful works for more advanced choirs.
