The test from this delightful song comes from the poet William Blake’s “Songs of Innocence.” The song opens with a flute obligato prior to the entrance of the chorus on the text “Piping down the valleys wild, piping songs of pleasant glee.” Part of the fun of this piece is the variety of styles within one song; it changes from a rather lively 6/8 meter opening, to a more lyrical and quiet 2/4 section on the next page. The more upbeat section returns with a vengance, ending as the girls sing four part harmony on the laughing part of the song, “ha, ha, hee.” Lots of fun and rather challenging.
