The Banyuwangi region of Indonesia is in southeastern Java, not far from Bali. This celebratory tune begins with brief passages, intoning “Uki,” a magical word used to invited the wind. After accelerating to a percussive allegro, the men’s voices imitate Indonesian instruments while the women provide a cautionary text, warning that women should not be too tempted by the wind. This highly complex piece is a great introduction to Indonesian music, and, although difficult, is rather accessible in comparison to most others.
