Our choir sang this beautiful anthem at Ash Wednesday services, where it was well received. Based on a Norwegian folk tune, this haunting melody has Hebraic overtones. There is much unison writing, and although the men are placed in the upper register for part of the middle section, the result is worth the effort. You need a fine instrumentalist to pull this off – we used clarinet, which seemed quite appropriate for the underlying sadness in the text. The instrumental parts for both oboe and clarinet are printed at the back of the choral score.
