This cantata was performed by a trio when it was sung in Luebeck. It is effective for a choir to sing the opening and closing chorus (the same thing) with soloists singing the three intervening arias. The bulk of the German text is in the solo parts with the choir singing the same sentence over and over again (how Baroque!) making this a good introductory work for choirs that have not sung very much German. The frequent repetition of the word “nichts” makes for lots of fun in the rehearsal. Despite the work’s apparent simplicity it is a highly rewardingpiece, both in terms of singer and audience reaction.
