In 2020, California director and teacher Drew Lewis arranged the late Sondheim’s famous ballad as an exercise for the SWCC Harmony Retreat in Creston, IA. An instructor for the workshop, Matt Falker, loved it so much that he offered to publish it through his company Anchor Music Publications. The arrangement is elegant in its simplicity. Lewis inserts an occasional chord substitution at cadences for added interest, but for the most part, he sticks to the original, mimicking Sondheim’s undulating piano accompaniment and allowing the beautiful melody and lyrics to speak for themselves. A very flexible arrangement, it would work well for vocal jazz, contemporary a cappella, or traditional choirs alike.
