1. The Farmer’s Boy; 2. Marianne; 3. Byker Hill “North Country Folk Songs” includes three delightful English folksongs arranged by English composer Philip Wilby, a composition student of Herbert Howells. Sandwiched between the march-like arrangement of “The Farmer’s Boy” and the quick and energetic coal-mining song “Byker Hill” is a slow, lush setting of the English sailor song “Marianne.” These creative arrangements may be programmed separately or as a group and would be accessible to an advanced high school or community choir, as well as a college or university ensemble. Ranges are typical, though basses capable of singing an E below the bass staff are needed for “Marianne.” Choristers and audience alike will enjoy these arrangements.
