This tune is a terrific arrangement of the epic musical finale to Act I of Les Miserables. It features a number of stunning harmonic moments as well as single-gender sections and lines to feature both your women and men. Near the end, each of these individual lines are sung in a polyphonic texture, all culminating with the full chorus in 8-part homophonic singing. The arrangement differs very little from the actual score (aside from the insturmentation) and will really allow your singers to use their entire insturment. This piece is a great way to teach text emphasis and diction because there is a lot of text to sing, and each part has a different part of the story. Also, because the style of this music may differ from many other things that you program in your choirs or showchoirs, this tune could provide a great way to help students healthfully discover different timbres in their voices. Finally, this tune lends itself to thoughtful and creative staging that could be done by the teacher or even a student-led group to supplement the presentation of this piece.
