Scott’s melody to this slightly altered Andrewes (1555-1626) text is so natural and singable that one looks in vain to see where this “folktune” originated. Much of the piece is in unison or two part canon, with the middle section in four parts (sopranos divide on a few notes). The composer has indicated that the final section “may be used as a benediction response.” This would be especially effective as a “recap” when the full anthem has been sung earlier in the service. Appropriate for any theme of dedication or commitment.
