This is one of the secular hits of the early sixteenth century. The melody of the courtly song dealing with Scaramella’s exploits in war and love was the basis of many compositions in the early Renaissance. The setting may be performed by a quartet or a chorus. Texts are in English and Italian. An instrument may double the tenor, and percussion (drum, tambourine) may be added “ad libitum.”
