Composed in five short movements, this piece sets excerpts of odes by John Keats and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Homophonic textures predominate in the work, interspersed with some gentle imitation. Kim’s understated harmonic language and its relatively slow harmonic rhythm foregrounds the texts’ own lyricism. A full performance runs about nine minutes.

The surface simplicity and ephemeral texture demand extra attention to text declamation and the shape of each phrase. Conductors would do well to decide early on dynamic nuance and tempo inflections and then teach them to the ensemble immediately, perhaps on a chanted unison or Shaw pitches.
