Purcell’s “Fairy Queen” is an unusual textbook of English Baroque compositional technique. The entire work is quite lengthy, but judicious “editing” provides an easily assembled suite of pieces that will hold their own on a diversity of programs. This excerpt might be called a “Cantata on the Seasons. ” It is a nicely framed group of solos for the seasons with an opening and closing chorus in the “grand” style.
