All young and aspiring conductors should know Thompson’s Frostiana, the choral cycle set to the texts of Robert Frost, and especially this classic first song from the collection. Set for SATB chorus and piano, Thompson captures the pensive nature of the well-known poem perfectly. The setting is slow, quiet and in strophic form. The first verse is sung in unison and the succeeding verses are sung in beautifully harmonized, homophonic style, building to an exquisite Picardy third on the last chord of the phrase “and that has made all the difference.” In a brief coda, the phrase is repeated for added emphasis. Other than low D for the bass, the ranges are very accessible for high school voices and the music is not difficult. This is an excellent selection for graduation or any program.
