British composer Joby Talbot has received a lot of acclaim recently for his evening-length work Path of Miracles. This six-minute piece The Wishing Tree creates a similarly yawning soundscape in a fraction of the time. The song explores a wonderful poem by Scottish poet Kathleen Jamie; the “wishing tree” being a physicalized location where wishes are “placed” in hopes of coming true. In the poem the tree itself is somewhat brutalized under the weight of expectations, but even so at the end we discover it still stands “in bloom.” This is a fantastic piece about resilience and persistence, and the music does not hesitate.
