The vocal group Anonymous 4 has recorded numerous medieval carols and ballads, and earthsongs has published many of them in the original voicings used by this outstanding group, which are in fact as the carols were originally written out centuries ago. The opening refrain (the burden) is in two parts, but Anonymous 4 have filled in the fauxbourdon, a method of harmonizing a middle part in parallel 6/3 chords. The verses return to a two-part texture. A very challenging part of this arrangement is the fact that it is written out in Old English, and this did take some time to get used to, especially as some slurs in the vocal parts are left out by the publisher. There is, however, a clear IPA guide to pronouncing the text on the back page. This is yet another winner from earthsongs.
