Frank Ticheli, known mostly for his band compositions, has created an exquisite a cappella choral setting of the poem by Sara Teasdale. This is a difficult piece, calling for sustained energy and divisi up to seven parts at a time. The style is rubato, allowing for an expressive rendering of the poetry. The vocal ranges, while being moderate most of the time, require sustained A-flats from both tenor and soprano, and the bass must have a secure low E-flat. The composer’s notes in the score describe Ms. Teasdale’s poetry saying, “…a perfect summary of her lifelong concern for the stars and their ancient promise of peace. This choral setting is designed to capture the poem’s purity of spirit and delicate lyicism.”
