Viva la Quince Brigada originated during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) and is attributed to the Abraham Lincoln Battalion, the American Volunteers, who fought alongside 35,000 other soldiers to comprise the Fifteenth International Brigade (La Quince Brigada). The text is in Spanish and the music has a traditional Spanish flare that contrasts between legato and marcato singing. A clapping part for the choir adds another layer of stylistic authenticity. Don’t let the voicing scare you away – this piece is very accessible for the young middle school/junior high boys’ choir.
