Bob Chilcott sang tenor in the King’s Singers from 1985 to 1997, and then turned, quite successfully, to full-time choral composition. We Are was written in 2017 for a recording project to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the King’s Singers. The text is The Human Family, a poem by Maya Angelou, who at various points in her amazing life was a fry cook, a sex worker, a singer, a dancer (in a duo with Alvin Ailey!), a journalist, an actress, a writer/producer, a playwright, a poet, a civil rights activist (close friends with Malcolm X and James Baldwin), and a memoirist (no wonder she wrote seven autobiographies). Her poem playfully and joyfully affirms our unity in our diversity.
