Another piece with text by that great American treasure, Maya Angelou, is Why A Caged Bird Sings by Rollo Dilworth, taken from Angelou’s poem Caged Bird published in 1983. This work could help open much-needed discussions among singers and audience on what many over the past year have termed our country’s “original sin,” slavery and racism. Rollo asks for crisp consonants, vibrant rhythm, and “leaning” into the syncopations. Then this relatively simple work will really come alive.
